Texts I am inspired by, texts I write, texts in other languages are all pictured. Some are from books of Anselm Hollo’s poetry, a Finnish translator and author I look to often. He writes about love, heritage, and folk music. I write about my family’s history. I ask questions like: how far did you walk? in reference to my Iso Mummi’s journey across the Karelian-Finnish border during the Winter War. I write letters to my Mummi, whose stories are at the center of my work. I think it’s important to document how I translate these texts from the original source inspiration into my artwork. How I respond to these texts and how I am responding to my family members is the focus of this category.
